Why a Root Canal May Be Recommended

Root canal treatments are an effective way to help prevent further damage and save an infected tooth from extraction. This procedure also minimizes the need for more extensive dental work in the future.

By removing the decay and bacteria from the inner tooth, your dentist can help stop the spread of an infection and restore the healthy portion of the tooth. The majority of patients who undergo root canals experience little discomfort or pain and are left with a restored tooth.

With proper care and cleaning, most teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime.

The Root Canal Procedure

First, your dentist will apply a local anesthetic to the affected tooth and surrounding area. Your dentist will create an opening in the upper part of the tooth, and then the pulp and nerve are removed.

After removing the diseased tissue, your dentist will clean and disinfect the tooth's inner chamber before filling it with medicated material, which can help prevent the infection from reoccurring.

Finally, a dental restoration, such as a crown, is placed on top of the tooth to protect it.
